Born in San Miguel district, Manila on 7 December 1910 to Dr. Nicanor Padilla and Doña Isabel Bibby, Ambrosio Padilla earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the Ateneo de Manila in 1930, summa cum laude. In 1934, he earned his Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of the Philippines, placing third in the Bar examinations for the same year. From the University of Santo Tomas, he earned his Doctors of Law degree (mertissimus) in 1938. He was a member of the Philippine basketball team for Far Eastern Games in Tokyo and Manila and was the captain of the Philippine Basketball team that participated in the 1936 Berlin Olympics which garnered fifth place, losing only to the United States.  

  

He started his law practice as assistant attorney in the law office of former Judge Eulogio P. Revilla and later became a Senior Partner in the law firm of Padilla, Carlos and Fernando in 1945. He was appointed Solicitor General in 1954 and served in the said position until 1957 when he ran and was elected as Senator of the Republic. He was a three-term Senator, serving from 1963 up to 1969. He served as vice-president of the FIBA (International Amateur Basketball Association) and the first president of the Basketball Association of the Philippines. He also headed the Philippine Olympic Committee from 1972 to 1976.

 

Ambrosio Padilla was married to Lourdes de las Alas with whom he had ten children. He died on August 7, 1996.
